STEUBENVILLE, OH—Father Sean Sheridan, TOR, president of Franciscan University of Steubenville, today announced the appointment of Father Nathan Malavolti, TOR, as the new vice president of Community Relations.
Father Malavolti fills the position vacated earlier this month when Father Richard Davis, TOR, was appointed minister provincial of the Franciscan TOR Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which oversees Franciscan University.
"I am very pleased that Father Nathan will be part of our Franciscan University family and direct the many ways we collaborate with the wonderful community in which we live and minister. Father Nathan brings an abundance of Franciscan joy to his ministry, and I am confident that he will share that joy with the people of the Ohio Valley,” said Father Sheridan.
“I also want to thank Father Richard Davis for his years of service as the University's vice president of Community Relations,” Father Sheridan added. “While no one could ever replace Father Richard, I know that Father Nathan will make every effort to be as involved in our community as was Father Richard.”
The Community Relations Department acts as the link between Franciscan University and the surrounding tri-state area. In his role as vice president, Father Malavolti will continue to strengthen the University’s connections with the community, civic, diocesan, and religious organizations across the Ohio Valley.
Father Malavolti said he looks forward “with joy and excitement” to his new duties, which begin August 1. “From my many visits to Steubenville, I know the tri-state area is filled with many good people of all faiths and backgrounds. I look forward to finding more ways Franciscan University can help make this an even better community in which to live and raise a family.”
Father Malavolti grew up in central Illinois and completed his PhD in analytical chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1986. After working in various assignments as a research chemist, predominantly in the pharmaceutical industry, he discerned a call to the priesthood and the Third Order Regular Franciscans and started his studies in the Jubilee Year of 2000. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2005 and served as a chemistry professor at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania, where he also was chaplain for the men’s and women’s volleyball teams and the Omega Zeta Nu sorority, among other assignments. He also served as a chaplain for an outreach program for mentally challenged adults.
In 2007, Father Malavolti was appointed a member of the Board of Trustees of Franciscan University of Steubenville. His first contact with Franciscan University came from 1988 to 1989, when he was a student and member of the Priestly Discernment Program and in Koinoia Household.
