SPRING 2013 CLASS SCHEDULE

(Classes will be held in the Seminar Room, St. Joseph Center, unless otherwise indicated)

**CLASSES WILL BEGIN MONDAY, APRIL 8 ENDING MAY 16 **

 MONDAY

10:30am to 12:30 pm 
 Course #1 - American Pages...our literary heritage continues

Instructor – Pete Thomas Caleodis

Facilitator – Judy Brancazio - 740-282-0016

By popular demand, the first half-hour of each class will be devoted to a study of language, usage, and grammar.  The remaining time will be spent continuing the study of American literature of the Twentieth Century, including such writers as Carl Sandburg, Edgar Lee Masters, Robert Frost, E.E. Cummings, James Thurber, and Ogden Nash.

Course #2 – Let's Travel Through Europe

Instructor – Father Richard Davis, TOR

Facilitator – Donna Keagler – 740-266-9466

Fr. Richard will use "London: A Short History of the Greatest City in the Western World" presented on DVD by Professor Robert Buchotz, and a supplement with other DVD's about some other European Countries.  Join him for this historical walk. 

TUESDAY

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon 
 Course #3 – A.L.L. Leadership Training

Instructor – Dr. Jerry Jo Gilham

Facilitator – Sue Stanko – 740-283-2671

Are some people born leaders?   Can leadership be developed in anyone?  What is the difference between management and leadership, and what are the various ethical issues associated with these roles?  The class will answer these and other questions - such as how leaders use and abuse power and authority, and how they can use influence and persuasion to their advantage.  The class will conclude with an exploration of teamwork, and what makes teams work effectively.

Course #4 – So You Wanna Be In A Choir

We have an enthusiastic group who've been singing their hears out in this class for the past two semesters, and they love every minute of it!  Come on out and have a good time - especially you men! Don't let the women have all the fun!  This class will be held at the Center of Music and Art.

 

WEDNESDAY

Course #5 – We Can Do Better

Instructor – Dr. Edward Rudiger

From our very beginnings, Americans have sought to improve themselves and their society.  Some of these movements permanently changed our culture, others came and went without much notice, and some are still a force in the modern world.  During this series, we will consider the following reform movements that shaped American society: Revivalism; Abolitionism; Democratizing the World; Temperance; Women's Suffrage; Civil Rights.

Course #6 – Beginning and Intermediate Bridge

Instructor – Bill Hope

Many of our former "newbies' have gone on to be successful intermediate players, and they will be returning to further hone their skills.  We can also offer the novice player a chance to learn this most fascinating and ever-challenging game - even if you don't know how many cards are in the deck!  Take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn 'from scratch' with our very patient instructor. 

THURSDAY - Will be spent alternating day trips with the following classes:

Course #7 – A Writer's Clinic

Instructor – Karen "Karina" Majoris-Garrison

Karina is President of the Tri-State Writers' Society, and also, an award-winning author whose stories appear nationally in the best-selling series Chicken Soup for the Soul; Woman's World; Integrity Publishers; God's Way Series and other publications.  This newest Writer's Clinic Workshop will cover a brief recap of previous classes, and then expand into literary aspects of constructive critique, tips and exercises for creating the tightest and most polished form of writing.  Each class will end with a Q & A designed to bring full understanding of the literary world.

Course #8 – Capitol Musings

Instructors – Former State Representatives Jerry and Eileen Krupinski

Facilitator – Marge Bedortha 740-264-2779

These experienced legislators will share their decades of hands-on experience in government and the political process.  This informal, non-partisan presentation will offer participants insight into the world of governing and politics, especially on the Federal level.  The class will attempt to foster awareness and understanding of current issues such as the Filibuster; Gerrymandering; the Electoral College; and Presidential Signing Statements.  We will also discuss other things: how your simple idea can become the law of the land - and we'll collectively try to understand Washington-Speak such as Sequestration, the Fiscal Cliff ( a self-imposed crisis ), and Striking a Trillion Dollar Coin!

Sounds like a fascinating afternoon!

The trip planners have worked hard to package and prepare these trips for your maximum enjoyment and comfort - and many deposits are required to be paid by ALL.  We ask your cooperation and understanding in abiding by these rules, so that we can continue to offer these deluxe and enjoyable trips at reasonable costs.  We will be unable to make any refunds for cancellations unless received before the due date!  However, reservations are transferable to other persons.

1.  April 18 – A Trolley Tour of Downtown Steubenville .

Our Trolley Bus will leave the lower parking lot of Franciscan University at 8:30 a.m.  First stop - Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County on No. 4th Street in downtown Steubenville, where Director Alan Hall will take us on a "behind the scenes" tour of the facility.  Next, the trolley will take us to Nelson Fine Arts and Gifts, where the Nelson family will meet us and guide us through their main warehouse - a rare privilege.  We'll lunch at Froelich's Classic Corner - with a pre-selected menu of your choice, and enjoy the company of Baron von Steuben as we eat!  Next stop is a Docent guided tour of the Steubenville Murals before the trolley returns us to Franciscan at 3:30.  

All-inclusive cost per person is $40.  Registration and check MUST BE RECEIVED BY APRIL 4.  Specify your lunch choice on your registration.

PLEASE NOTE: due to the limited space in the trolley, this trip will be strictly limited to the first twenty (20) persons who register.

2.  May 2 –  Phipps Conservatory & The Carnegie Museum of Art

Our deluxe bus will depart from Franciscan University lower parking lot at 8:00 a.m.  We will be treated to a docent-led tour of Phipps Conservatory in Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.  The elegant Victorian Greenhouse, built in 1983, will be in full color and beauty with the new Summer Exhibit.  Lunch at Cafe Phipps for your pre-selected menu, then on to the nearby Carnegie Museum of Art for a 1:10 p.m. docent-led tour.  Monet, Van Gogh, Homer, and Hopper are only a few of the renowned artists whose works you can admire.  There will be "on-your-own" time before we board our bus for home at 3:00 p.m.

All-inclusive cost per person is $70.  Registration and check MUST BE RECEIVED BY APRIL 18.  Specify your lunch choice on your registration.

3.  May 16 – A Trip to Mount Pleasant & The Underground Railway

Our motor coach will leave lower parking lot at Franciscan at 8:30 a.m.  We will arrive at Mount Pleasant for a picturesque trip into the past.  This small village is National Landmark District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  We will receive a guided tour of the Village; have lunch at the Farm Restaurant; and visit the Historical Center, the Tin Shop and the Buriss Store, where souvenirs and gifts are available.  Back on the bus, and home around 4:30 p.m.

You'll pay for your own lunch; everything else is included in the $45 per person cost.  Registration and NON-REFUNDABLE CHECK MUST BE RECEIVED BY MAY 2.
