The Sower was founded in 1919 by English theologian Canon Francis Drinkwater. The Maryvale Institute, a Catholic institution of higher education in theology and evangelization in England, acquired The Sower in 1992.
In 2006 Franciscan University took on responsibility for promoting and distributing The Sower in North America, which also increased the contributions from North American diocesan and catechetical leaders.
The Sower breaks open the sources of the Faith, namely, Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the General Directory for Catechesis, and other relevant church documents in the area of evangelization and catechesis.
