Live and study for a semester in Gaming, Austria, just a short and enjoyable train ride from Rome, Prague, Avignon, and the whole of Europe. Spend a summer in Ávila, Spain, or a semester in Oxford, England. Or, if you’d like, work with our faculty to craft your own study abroad experience at many universities in Argentina, Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, England, France, Germany, Spain, or any suitable country of your choice.
Wherever you go, you will be forever changed by the study abroad experiences Franciscan University has to offer.
Our largest and very popular study abroad program, the Austria program brings 150-200 Franciscan students to the center of Europe every semester. Students participating in this program live and learn in a 14th-century former Carthusian monastery. Classes are taught in English by Franciscan University professors, and students studying in the German Bachelor’s Degree Program will have ample opportunities to immerse themselves in the German language. Weekly travel opportunities make the grand heritage of Western civilization—especially of our Catholic faith—come alive. It is an experience our students and alumni talk about for the rest of their lives. Explore the Austria pages to learn more about the Study in Austria opportunity. >>
Students enrolled in the Spanish Bachelors Degree Program have the opportunity to study in the medieval Spanish city of Ávila, home of St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Ávila. The Institute of Spanish Language and Culture at the Catholic University of Ávila takes place over 4 weeks in July and the credits earned count toward your Spanish studies at Franciscan University of Steubenville. But, ¡por supuesto! the classroom courses are hardly the most compelling reason to spend a July in Ávila de España. Contact Dr. Alberto Descalzo de Blas to inquire about the Ávila Program. >>
If your academic interests include studying the Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern periods, we offer semester experiences at the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Oxford University in England. This opportunity is ideal for those enrolled in the English Bachelor’s Degree Program. Contact Dr. John Holmes in the English Department to inquire. >>
Through the cooperation of our faculty members and International Studies Abroad, students are able to pursue study abroad programs in many other countries, pursuing a variety of academic interests, while drinking in the local culture. The opportunities abound, but be sure to discuss any desired study abroad opportunity with appropriate faculty members and the registrar before you start making any plans. Please visit our study abroad sponsor’s website to learn more about the numerous opportunities available. >>

Class of 2006Major: Spanish
The summer before he graduated from Franciscan University in 2006 with a degree in Spanish, David Hickson graduated from Marine Officer Candidate School. He knew exactly what he was going to be: a Marine Officer. But after much time in prayer and struggling to find peace, he realized that he simply couldn’t kill other human beings. He turned down his commission and thought he was going to the seminary to be a Navy chaplain, but he didn’t find peace that route either. Then, Hickson decided to follow in his parents’ footsteps and teach.
