STEUBENVILLE, OH — Franciscan University’s Schola Cantorum Franciscana will sing Compline, the last of the Catholic Church’s daily Liturgy of the Hours, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Wheeling, West Virginia, on Saturday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m.
"The beautiful setting of Wheeling's Cathedral will provide the perfect atmosphere for an evening of musical prayer," says Dr. Paul Weber, Franciscan University assistant professor of music and the director of the program in organ.
Weber will begin the service with a short organ recital. The choir’s rendition of Compline will include the beautiful chants and hymns proper to the night prayer as well as some a capella motets by the Renaissance masters, Victoria and Gallus.
Schola Cantorum Franciscana is the University’s liturgical choir, which sings for Sunday and daily Masses on campus and for Steubenville and Pittsburgh churches. The choir is trained in Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony and Sacred Music in the Latin and English traditions.
