Important Deadlines for May 2014 Graduating Students

Friday, March 27 is the last day to submit graduation applications and to RSVP for Commencement. Students submitting applications after this date may not be able to participate in commencement.

CAPS & GOWNS

You may purchase your cap and gown at the Franciscan University Bookstore beginning on Monday, April 20. Of course, you may feel free to borrow a cap & gown from a previous graduate--so long as they received the same degree (BA, MBA, MA, etc.) and you are the same height. Keep in mind that gowns for graduate degrees are longer than those for undergraduate degrees, and each graduate degree has a different color hood.

EVENT PHOTOS

A photographer from Graduation Foto will be taking photographs at commencement of each graduate receiving his or her diploma from Fr. President Sean Sheridan and in front of a green screen. You will receive wallet-sized proofs of these photos after commencement. Orders may be made online at graduationfoto.com or by calling 1-800-482-0321. Questions may be emailed to cs@apmphoto.com.

Since photographs will be available, family members and guests are encouraged to remain in their seats to relax and enjoy the ceremony.

You may also pre-register at graduationfoto.com which will expedite the process afterward. You may add contact information for up to 6 additional relatives and/or friends.

TICKETS

Graduation tickets will be distributed at the end of commencement rehearsal, only to those participating in commencement exercises. Each undergraduate will receive four guest tickets. Students not participating do not receive tickets. Due to limited seating, we are unable to accommodate additional ticket requests. Students are encouraged to check with other graduates who may not need all of their tickets.

If you are unable to secure enough tickets for all guests, be advised that the undergraduate ceremony will be telecast in the J.C. Williams Center. (Also, The JCWC is more convenient for children and for those who may find it difficult to sit on bleachers for two hours.)

Tickets are not needed for the Graduate Commencement ceremonies.

Live Online Stream
Also, both ceremonies will be available online. Check the University front page on the day of commencement for the link.

ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION

Applications for graduation are due by Friday, March 27, 2015. Applications submitted after this date will be accepted, but students may not be able to participate in the commencement ceremony. If you did not fill out the backside of the graduation application and would like to participate in commencement exercises email the registrar at registrar@franciscan.edu to RSVP ASAP.

REHEARSAL

All students participating in the commencement ceremony must attend rehearsal. Rehearsal for graduate students is on Thursday, May 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the Gallery of the JCWC and will last approximately one hour. Rehearsal for undergraduate students is on Friday, May 8 starting at 9:30 a.m. at the J.C. Williams Center. Formation of the procession line and pronunciation of names will be reviewed. At rehearsal you will receive important instructions regarding academic garb, the Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement. Tickets will be distributed at the end of rehearsal. Students finding it impossible to attend rehearsal must contact the Registrar’s Office by Friday, April 24.

BACCALAUREATE MASS

Baccalaureate Mass begins at 6:00 p.m. in Finnegan Fieldhouse on Friday, May 8. No tickets are required although seating is limited. Degree candidates must report to the J.C. Williams Center in academic garb by 5:15 p.m. Further instructions will be given at rehearsal.

GRADUATION VIDEOS

Graduation videos covering the Baccalaureate Mass homily and Commencement exercises will be available on DVD for $27.95, plus shipping and handling. To order a copy, please call the Franciscan University Bookstore at 1-888-333-0381, or visit them online. Allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

DEGREES

Those students who double-majored will only receive one degree, and those students with majors in both a BA and a BS program will automatically receive a BA degree. If you would like to receive a BS instead you must notify the Registrar no later than Friday, March 28, 2014.

TRANSCRIPTS

Transcripts showing the conferral of a degree may take up to two weeks to be available, but students may submit a request for an updated transcript before departing Steubenville. On the request form you must circle "Hold until statement of degree is available" to make sure the conferral date is indicated before the transcript is sent. If an initial transcript is needed before the semester is over, a separate request must be submitted.

Important: Account balances must be paid in full before transcripts are released.

Grade and Graduation Eligibility Information

Senior grades must be submitted by faculty to the Registrar's Office by 12 noon on Thursday, May 7. Grades will be entered as soon as possible and should appear on the FUS Web by Friday morning, May 8.

Each student should receive a degree audit indicating whether or not he or she is in progress for graduating. If any deficiencies are indicated, take care of them immediately. Otherwise, the Registrar will notify students by rehearsal if they have failed to meet requirements for graduation (failed courses, low GPA, etc.).

GRADUATING WITH HONORS

Students earning a 3.5 overall GPA or higher may be eligible for academic honors (cum laude: 3.50-3.69, magna cum laude: 3.70-3.89, or summa cum laude: 3.90-4.00). Transfer students must have earned their last 62 consecutive credit hours at Franciscan University to be eligible for honors. Students receiving academic honors will wear a gold honor cord for commencement. These cords will be handed out at rehearsal. Honors will not be determined until all grades have been received. Also, a gold bar will be affixed to the diploma indicating honors status.

DIPLOMAS

Diplomas do not include major or minor areas of study because the degree conferred and attested to by the diploma is simply "Bachelor of Arts," etc. The major is separate from the degree. Majors and minors are listed on the transcript, which is most often requested by employers.

Those graduates who do not attend commencement will have their diploma mailed to them by the Registrar's office. Make sure we have the correct mailing address.

But no diploma will be mailed if the student still owes a balance. Diplomas will be held until all balances are cleared with Student Accounts.

Other questions?

General questions about the Graduation ceremonies should be directed to the Registrar at (740) 283-6226 (option 4), or registrar@franciscan.edu
