    Class of 2009

    Majors: Marketing

“I have been called to business since I worked my first job in sixth grade, selling cotton candy at The Superdome at Saints and Tulane football games and concerts,” Patrick Mansfield says.

When he came to Franciscan University, his call to entrepreneurship only deepened. His fondest memories are of being involved for four years with student government and eventually serving as student body president. He says, “It helped build leadership skills and instilled the passion to be relentless in the pursuit of what you desire.”

From his business classes and professors, Patrick learned how to successfully market oneself and one’s company in an increasingly technology-driven age.

“With social media, everyone is a brand and marketing something, and it doesn’t just have to be for bad things,” Patrick says. “Franciscan is where I learned that we can use those platforms for the Church and good works as well in the new evangelization.”

In 2012, Patrick and some business partners founded Vatican Capital, the first faith-based venture capital firm. The firm, which currently focuses on the gulf south—Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama—invests in Catholic entrepreneurs.

“My business degree helped form my ethical and moral mindset going into business,” Patrick says. “Part of the reason I started Vatican Capital was to help Catholic entrepreneurs grow their business and hopefully be able to give back more to the Church and community.”

Patrick’s job entails networking with entrepreneurs, CEOs, business owners, and investors, finding the right deals and investments for the firm, reviewing business plans and financial projections, and managing fundraising and investor relations.

The road to entrepreneurial success is paved with hard work and planning, he says. Hustle to network, get an internship, listen to the advice of those who came before you, and don’t just stop with an email. “Members of our generation need to go face-to-face for meetings, write handwritten notes, and focus on setting up a game plan for where they want to be,” he says.

Patrick’s long-term plans include growing the Vatican Capital brand and establishing a family office that is also involved in real estate development in the South.
