I first visited Franciscan University for a Youth Conference. Before the conference, my youth group spent a week in the city of Steubenville doing a service project. I fell in love, both with the city and the University. That made choosing a college easy.

I was talking with some friends recently, and we decided the two things that really make Franciscan University unique are households and the Austria experience. Both connect you to countless other students who have come through Franciscan. It creates this tight network of connections across the country and between people of different ages.

Austria in particular is amazing because it calls you so far out of your comfort zone and gives you all this practical formation—how to travel with a group of friends, how to handle new situations, how to navigate people’s differences. At the same time, if offers you the chance to travel Europe and pray in churches that have been around for a thousand years. Every moment in Austria is a teachable moment.

I’ve been called out of my comfort zone in the best of ways since coming to Franciscan. That’s one of the reasons I feel ready for missions work, which is what I’m hoping to do after graduation, whether in a foreign country or in the U.S. Here, I learned in and out of the classroom what it means to serve. I’ve also learned who I am.

One of my Stella Mariae Household sisters likes to say, “Until you know who you are kneeling in front of the cross, you don’t know who you can be before the rest of the world.” That’s the best lesson I’ve learned here.

Franciscan University of Steubenville is no ordinary university, and a Franciscan education is no ordinary education. Rather, it's an education as rigorous and demanding as it is faithful--an education that challenges you intellectually, forms you professionally, and feeds you spiritually.

You can help Franciscan lead the way in providing a faithfully Catholic education!
