Assistant/Associate Professor of Theology

The Department of Theology and Philosophy

Franciscan University of Steubenville (FUS) Theology Department invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, yearly renewable position at Assistant or Associate Professor level, beginning August 2025, at the University’s study-abroad Program located in Gaming, Austria.  Area of specialization is open, but the capacity to teach introductory courses in Scripture, Christology, Ecclesiology, Moral Theology, and Sacraments is required. Normal teaching load is 3 three-credit courses per semester, with primary teaching responsibility for one section of “Trinity and Christology” and “Theology of the Church” each once a year, together with a section of “Christian Moral Principles” every semester. We are also interested in candidates who are willing to teach upper-level theology electives (such as “Christian Spirituality,” or “St. Francis: Life and Charism”), supplemented by occasional seminars in our Great Books Honors Program as well as graduate level theology courses.

An appropriate Ph.D. or S.T.D. is required at time of employment, but ABD candidates will be considered. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, have an active scholarly agenda, and support the Mission of the university (available at http://www.franciscan.edu/about/mission-statement/ ). He or she must also be open to:

  • Contribute to extra-curricular activities fostered by the program which promote the student’s moral, intellectual, and spiritual growth (through evening talks, for example).
  • Help – at most once a year – with guided visits to Roman sites in the course of our Rome and Assisi pilgrimage.
  • Contribute to departmental tasks (such as academic orientation).

An Austrian work visa will be provided through the University, as will housing and health insurance for the successful candidate and his or her family.  Applicants should bear in mind that the assignment to Gaming is permanent and without an expectation for the professor to eventually teach at FUS’s Ohio campus.

To apply, please submit the following items electronically addressed to Dr. Javier Carreño via Mr. Nicholas Riccardi, Academic Affairs, at [email protected]: a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a teaching portfolio containing evidence of undergraduate teaching effectiveness (including teaching evaluations and a statement of teaching philosophy), a personal statement responding to FUS’s Mission, and a writing sample. Three letters of reference on your behalf should be independently sent to us.

Review of completed applications will begin November 29, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.

FUS is an academically excellent and passionately Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition.  The Austrian Program is home to over 230 Franciscan study-abroad students each semester.  We seek candidates who understand and will significantly contribute to the university’s mission and goals.  For additional information, please visit https://franciscan.edu/faculty-openings/
