STEUBENVILLE, OHIO — Following three months of protests, a bloody conflict erupted in Kiev, Ukraine this week, resulting in large numbers of civilian deaths.

Father Yuriy Sakvuk will provide an update on the current situation in Ukraine, as well as on the work of Ukrainian Catholic University on Thursday, February 27, at 7:00 p.m. The talk will be held at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Pugliese Auditorium in the Sts. Cosmas and Damian Science Hall.

“As are most of the people of Ukraine, Eastern Rite Catholics are fighting for their dignity, welfare and future of their country against an extremely corrupt, Russian-supported government,” said Dr. Alexander Sich, a Franciscan University physics professor who has lived and worked in the Ukraine. “Father Sakvuk will provide Catholics in this country valuable insights into the current struggle.”

Father Sakvuk is the director of Spiritual Life and Pastoral Ministry at Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in L’viv, Ukraine.

Father Sakvuk’s primary reason for visiting is to learn about Franciscan University’s student life program and possibly adopt some of its practices at his school. He will also concelebrate a Mass on campus, asking for the Franciscan community’s prayers for Ukraine.

Franciscan University will be Father Sakvuk’s first stop on a two-month trip to the United States and Canada, aimed at fundraising and visiting primarily Ukrainian Greek-Catholic parishes.
