STEUBENVILLE, OHIO—Franciscan University of Steubenville has been awarded a $300,000 grant from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to conduct research and development in multi-spectral sensing technologies.

The Baron Crow project will focus on innovating secure software-defined radio (SDR) technologies and associated hardware and software. This research aims to enhance the collection and display of radio frequency signals, improve data transmission in electronically challenging environments, and extend SDR-based networks.

“This grant represents a significant investment in our students and faculty. It will allow us to contribute to critical advancements in national security and public safety while providing invaluable training to the next generation of engineers and computer scientists,” said Dr. David Collins, dean of Franciscan University’s School of Natural and Applied Sciences. “This project will also allow us to explore the ethical dimensions of these technologies through the lens of Catholic social teaching, something that is at the center of what we do in all our classes”

The Baron Crow project will involve modeling, simulation, design, testing, and evaluation of radio frequency signals and electro-optical subsystems and sensors. It will incorporate cutting-edge technologies, including SDRs, artificial intelligence (AI), and unmanned vehicles, in various offensive and defensive systems.

The research will be conducted within Franciscan University’s Department of Engineering and Computing. It will provide a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in a real-world research environment. Students involved in the research will also consider ethical implications of these technologies within the framework of Catholic social teaching.

As part of the AFRL agreement, students will also be trained by AFRL scientists and engineers during weekly Zoom sessions. Students who work on the project and excel will also have post-graduation employment opportunities with AFRL and other associated contractors.

The project will foster collaboration between Franciscan University and AFRL, facilitating knowledge transfer and the development of innovative solutions for the United States Air Force. The research outcomes are expected to have broad applications in areas such as spectrum management for wireless communications, cybersecurity, and information management within SDR scenarios. The University anticipates presenting research findings at conferences throughout the 24-month grant period.

The Air Force Research Laboratory is the primary scientific research and development center for the Department of the Air Force. AFRL plays an integral role in leading the discovery, development, and integration of affordable warfighting technologies for America’s air, space, and cyberspace force.
