Founders' Association to Honor Staff, Faculty, Preservers of Local History

STEUBENVILLE, OH—Franciscan University of Steubenville will honor four faculty and staff members for their service to the University, along with four key members of the Historic Fort Steuben project, at the 65th Annual Founders’ Association Dinner on Saturday, December 6, at 5:30 p.m. in the Tony and Nina Gentile Gallery of the J.C. Williams Center.

Jack Boyde, who passed away in 2000, was an expert on historic and prehistoric archaeology in the tri-state area and taught at Franciscan University for more than 30 years. He discovered and led excavations at the original site of Fort Steuben.

Elizabeth King taught sixth grade for more than 15 years in the Steubenville City Schools and was the first president of the board of the Old Fort Steuben Project, Inc., now known as Historic Fort Steuben.

In 1987, Richard King became the site manager for the Old Fort Steuben Project, spending the next 20 years overseeing the reconstruction and development of Historic Fort Steuben. Richard King passed away in 2006.

Jerry Barilla became involved with Historic Fort Steuben as a volunteer tour guide and board member in 2002 and took over as president for Elizabeth King in 2006.

Judy Bratten became the first full-time director of Historic Fort Steuben in 2004. She oversees the historic and cultural events at the fort and works to attract tourism to Steubenville.

Originally from China, Jack Wu is a catalogue librarian who has served at Franciscan University for 48 years, longer than any other current employee. He is responsible for bringing the John Paul II Library cataloging system to its current state-of-the-art system.

In the 1980s, John Green’s financial and administrative skills saved Franciscan University from financial disaster and set the school on track for continued stability and growth.

Lifelong Ohio Valley resident John Madigan, who passed away in 2008, served as a vital connection between the University and the local community during his many years as vice president for Community Relations.

The Rose M. DeFede Women’s Guild Scholarship and the University Founders’ Scholarship will be awarded to deserving Franciscan University students.

The Rose M. DeFede Women’s Guild Scholarship will be given to Crystal Boyd, homeschool GED graduate; Brittany Roe, Indian Creek High School graduate; Jana Macheca, East Liverpool High School graduate; Cheryl Myers, Buckeye Trail High School graduate; Natia Smith, Steubenville High School graduate; and Mycaela Stewart, Edison High School graduate.

The University Founders’ Scholarship will be awarded to Joshua Elliot, Delaware Christian School graduate; Bethany Potvin, Jefferson County Christian School graduate; and Eugene Renzelli, Indian Creek High School graduate.

Cheryl Meyers will also receive the Dr. Patricia Fletcher Scholarship.

The Founders’ Association Dinner was established in 1949 by Father Daniel Egan, TOR, the first president of the College of Steubenville, to draw the College and civic communities together. The Founders’ Award was established in 1978 to recognize outstanding contributions of men, women, and organizations to Franciscan University of Steubenville and the local community.
