STEUBENVILLE, OH—Two days before the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Franciscan University of Steubenville Theology professor, Dr. Alan Schreck will speak on “St. Francis and Pope Francis: Prayer, Poverty, and Joy in Jesus.”

His talk, based on his new book of the same name, will take place on Thursday, October 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Tony and Nina Gentile Gallery, J.C. Williams Center.

Schreck will speak on St. Francis’ virtues of prayer, poverty, and joy and will show what a medieval Italian Catholic friar and a 21st-century Argentinian pope have in common. He will also discuss why the former Cardinal Bergoglio chose Francis as his papal name, and how as pope he promulgates Franciscan values and lives in the spirit of St. Francis.

In 2008, Schreck traveled to Italy for a summer seminar on St. Francis sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Led by Franciscan scholars, Schreck and 15 other professors did intensive research about St. Francis, studying art and literature in Rome, Siena, and Assisi. Through this research, Schreck developed a deeper understanding of the life and virtues of St. Francis as he describes in his new book.

Schreck has been a professor of theology at Franciscan University since 1978. He served as chair of the Theology Department for 15 years and has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate theology levels.

He is the author of more than 15 books on the subjects of Catholic renewal, history of the Catholic Church, the Holy Spirit, Vatican II, Catholic tradition, and Pope John Paul II.

Schreck will host a signing for his latest book, St. Francis and Pope Francis: Prayer, Poverty, and Joy in Jesus, outside the Franciscan University Bookstore on Friday, October 3, from 11:00 a.m. until noon.

Both events are free and open to the public.
