STEUBENVILLE, OH—In honor of President Emeritus Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, Franciscan University of Steubenville is bringing back the tennis tournament that bears his name. The Father Michael Scanlan Tennis Tournament will be held the weekend of July 18–20 at Belleview Park in Steubenville.

The tennis tournament began in the 1980s as a public event. Eventually it became an intramural tournament for students only, before coming to an end in the mid 2000s. Father Scanlan was heavily involved in athletics during his tenure as Franciscan University president from 1974 to 2000. He often played tennis with the students and more often than not beat them. He retired in 2011 and moved to the Third Order Regular motherhouse in Loretto, Pennsylvania.

“Father Mike had many deep ties to the people of the Ohio Valley, and he loved athletic competition and playing tennis, his favorite sport,” said Athletic Director Chris Ledyard. “In bringing back this tournament, we are honoring Father Mike and the long of tradition of Franciscan athletics in our community.”

The tournament will have men’s and women’s brackets, men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and a junior bracket for players under the age of 18. There is a $20 entry fee per person or per doubles team. Concessions will be provided each day. Participants will receive a T-shirt and one complimentary meal.

Applications are available at www.franciscanathletics.com, or by contacting Scott Greve at 740-284-5891 or at [email protected].
