STEUBENVILLE, OHIO—Following an extensive preparation effort, Franciscan University of Steubenville has been formally reaffirmed as an institution of higher learning by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

The approval followed a multi-year process that included a comprehensive self-study report completed by a wide range of University faculty, administrators, staff, and students, culminating in an on-site visit by a five-member team from the HLC, which examined many aspects of the University and its programs.

“We are honored to once again receive accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission,” said Father Sean O. Sheridan, TOR, president of Franciscan University. “HLC accreditation is complex and rigorous. It applies to the University as a whole and includes a review of our academic, student life, athletics, campus ministries, and many other programs and services. This is validation that Franciscan University is continuing in its mission to educate, evangelize, and send forth students who will transform our world for Christ.”

The Higher Learning Commission is one of six regional entities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, which were established to develop and maintain high standards of academic excellence at U.S. colleges and universities.

Franciscan University has been continually reaccredited since 1960.

Located in southeastern Ohio, Franciscan University of Steubenville integrates strong academics with a dynamic faith environment to form a vibrant Catholic intellectual and faith community of over 2,400 students from all 50 states and 12 countries. With 40 undergraduate degrees, 7 graduate programs, and a popular study-abroad program in Austria, Franciscan University has ranked in the elite “top tier” of Midwest universities in U.S. News & World Report’s guidebook on “America’s Best Colleges” since 1998. It is also on FORBES select list of America’s Top Colleges, Kiplinger’s Best Values in Private Universities, and the Cardinal Newman Society’s Guide to Choosing a Catholic College.
