STEUBENVILLE, OHIO—Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Schola Cantorum Franciscana will present The Logos, a sacred music concert, on Friday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel. The concert will also be performed at two other churches in Pittsburgh on April 26 and May 2. For the first time, the schola will be joined by Franciscan University’s Women’s Choir.
The concert is the final installment in a three-year series dedicated to the Holy Family. It follows The God Bearer, which reflected on the Blessed Mother, and The Guardian, centered on St. Joseph. The Logos turns to Christ as the Word of God, offering a typological meditation on the opening chapters of Genesis and the Gospel of John, moving from creation to the Incarnation.
The program is divided into two parts. The first half draws on the Old Testament, featuring wordless choral works that evoke the mystery of creation before the coming of Christ. The second half shifts to the New Testament, incorporating scriptural and historical texts that illuminate Christ as the Word made flesh, with a particular focus on the Incarnation.
Originally founded as a liturgical choir, the Schola Cantorum Franciscana has expanded its mission more broadly to foster encounters with Christ through the beauty of the Church’s sacred music, presenting concert programs rooted in theological themes.
“The Schola Cantorum Franciscana and Women’s Choir offer their finest gifts to lead audiences into an encounter with Christ through beauty,” said Dr. Vincent Rone, adjunct professor of sacred music and conductor of the schola. “There is perhaps no more fitting way to do this than through music, the art form the Church has long held in highest esteem. We invite all to join us for an evening of prayer and reflection.”
In addition to the Franciscan University campus performance, the Schola Cantorum Franciscana will present The Logos at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, 3250 California Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at Epiphany Church, 184 Washington Place in Pittsburgh.
Members of Franciscan University’s Women’s Choir will also lead the music for a Traditional Latin Mass at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church on Sunday, April 26, at 11:00 a.m.
The performances are free and open to the public. A donation will be accepted.
