Study Abroad in Austria
Welcoming students from around the world to our Ohio campus
Franciscan University of Steubenville invites international undergraduate applicants to our passionately Catholic university! With students from nearly 17 countries, we believe in the beauty and power of the universal Church and cultivate a community dedicated to academic excellence and spiritual growth.
To apply, international students must submit a completed online application, verified academic transcripts evaluated by an approved National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) credential service, proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo), and a complete Certification of Finances.
Review the steps on this page and reach out to [email protected] if you need help or have questions throughout the Franciscan admissions process.
From Theology to Software Engineering and everything in between, we offer more than 40 associate and bachelor’s degree programs to help you become the Catholic version of your chosen profession.
Due to the time required to process international student applications and for students to make visa and financial arrangements, these deadlines have been established, after which applications cannot be processed:
Please note: Our Admissions Committee considers the care you put into your application in their admissions decision.
All materials must be submitted without exception before we process your application. The international undergraduate admission requirements differ somewhat from domestic student requirements; please review them carefully.
Complete Your Online Application
Submit your Undergraduate Application . Ensure your name matches your passport exactly, and all fields are completed in English. It is important that you give complete and accurate information.
Submit Certified Academic Records
Submit the official transcripts (or certificates) of all academic records or examination results documenting each year of study from the first year of secondary school and for all postsecondary or university-level work.
These documents must be signed by the appropriate school official, and only original or certified copies will be accepted. Original documents will be returned upon request.
Consideration of an application for admission cannot be given until the Admissions Office receives all required credentials.
Please send all credentials to Grace Nava, International Admissions Manager, via email at [email protected] .
In addition, you’re required to submit an official credential evaluation for a fee through a reputable provider, e.g., World Education Services (WES) or SpanTran. This fee is estimated at $160 to $200 U.S. dollars (USD), and you must pay it directly to the credential evaluation company you choose.
Franciscan University will accept a Course-by-Course Evaluation/Report. A Course-by-Course Evaluation identifies and describes each diploma or certificate, indicates the periods of education, provides an equivalency for each document, lists all courses (subjects) with U.S. semester credits, and gives a grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
Please review the full list of approved NACES credential evaluation companies.
If official credentials are in a language other than English, a certified English translation must be included. One option is World Education Services, which provides academic credential evaluation services for a fee. For more information on their services, visit the WES website .
Complete Your English Language Proficiency Requirements
All applicants must submit scores from one of our approved standardized tests of English language proficiency:
Applicants who are citizens of Canada (except Quebec) or whose requirements have been waived by the Admissions Office do not need to submit these test scores.
Note: Although English is the native language of many countries, some students from English-speaking countries must submit English proficiency exam scores to meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements for admission to Franciscan University.
Please contact the Admissions Office at Franciscan University as soon as possible to determine whether you are required to submit English proficiency exam scores with your application materials.
English proficiency exam information and registration forms are available in many locations outside the United States, usually at U.S. embassies, consulates, and other U.S. educational commissions and foundations.
Candidates who cannot obtain information locally about the TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or American College Test (ACT) exams should write Educational Testing Service, Box 955, Princeton, New Jersey, 08540, U.S.A., or visit the ETS website .
Applicants are also encouraged to submit SAT or ACT scores. The SAT is designed to assess your academic readiness for college, while the ACT measures what you have learned in school. Both are globally recognized admission tests.
Submit Your Financial Certification and Affidavit of Support
A Certification of Finances form must be completed and submitted. Signatures are required, and bank statements must be included. It is very important that this form is filled out correctly.
There are four sources of funds listed on the form: personal or family savings, parents, sponsors, or your government.
Next to the appropriate source, write the amount the source has promised to give you, and make sure that the support will last for all the years you will study.
After you have filled in the blocks horizontally, you must total the blocks vertically.
The totals at the bottom of each column (first year, second year, third year, and fourth year) should each equal the total cost of attending Franciscan University, an estimated $47,925* USD per academic year.
*These costs are subject to increase.
After the columns and rows are filled out completely, you need to complete “Section 9,” which asks for signatures of bank officials to verify that the financial resources are available.
You should be familiar with the regulations of your government about sending money to you in the United States and make arrangements to have the necessary funds available at the designated times.
All checks for payment of tuition and fees should be made payable to Franciscan University of Steubenville in U.S. dollars. Funds may also be wired through your bank. Instructions for wiring funds will be provided after acceptance to the University.
If you are able to secure a private sponsor to aid you with your educational expenses, the sponsor must complete an Affidavit of Financial Support and provide documentation to prove their ability to support you financially. You will need to submit one affidavit for each sponsor.
Only international students who plan on attending Franciscan on campus need to apply for an F-1 student visa. International students who apply for online study do not need to apply for an international student visa.
Receive Your Acceptance Letter and Form I-20
If your application for admission to Franciscan University of Steubenville is approved, an official letter of acceptance, a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20), and a prerequisite for a visa interview form will be sent to you.
Please note that admission is for a specific term. If you are unable to enroll for the term indicated in the notice of acceptance, you must notify the International Programs Office.
Under no circumstances should you depart for the United States unless you have received an official acceptance letter, a Form I-20, and a visa from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
If you arrive on campus without first receiving these documents, you do so at your own risk. Your presence on campus will not influence the Admissions Committee decision regarding your admission.
Obtain Your Passport and Visa and Prepare for Your Arrival
Before departing for the United States, present your I-20 authorization form and letter of acceptance to your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. You should request a multiple-entry (not a single-entry) visa, since you may wish to visit non-U.S. countries during your stay in the U.S.
Please DO NOT come to the University with a B-1/B-2 (tourist) visa.
IMPORTANT: International students seeking to study in the United States are required to complete Form I-901 and pay a $350 USD SEVIS fee before they will be permitted to enter the country. Students who must obtain an F-1 visa to attend will need to complete the Form I-901 before they schedule their appointment with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. To submit your Form I-901 and pay the $350 SEVIS fee, visit the Student and Exchange Visitor (SEVP) I-901 SEVIS Fee Processing website .
Consider International Student Health Insurance
We encourage you to decide how you will cover costs for accidents or illnesses requiring visits to physicians, health clinics, or the hospital emergency room while you are a student here. As always, our on-campus Health Center is staffed by a certified nurse practitioner Monday through Friday during normal business hours.
You do not need insurance to receive basic services at the Health Center, and visits cost only $5 USD at the time of service. If you receive a referral off campus for further lab testing, specialist care, or X-rays, you are responsible for paying for those external services.
International students must obtain health insurance that covers:
Medical and hospitalization costs
Medical evacuation
Repatriation of remains
You must provide the International Undergraduate Admissions Office with proof of coverage for all three requirements.
The international admissions process can be overwhelming. Know that you’re not alone—our staff is here to help.
Why do I need to submit a Certification of Finances form?
International students must provide evidence that they are able to finance their tuition, room and board, books, and travel to and from the United States before an I-20 can be issued by the University. The Certification of Finances form is part of that evidence and provides universities with complete and accurate information about the funds available to international applicants. This form is necessary both for Franciscan University records and as legal proof of finances for your visa interview with the U.S. Consulate.
How will I know what my expenses will be so that I can provide sufficient evidence to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate?
Because you must be able to furnish the United States Embassy or Consulate with evidence that you have access to, at a minimum, the total U.S. currency for each academic year, we’ve provided you with this estimate of expenses*:
* These are estimates for the 2026-27 year.
** Based on the 2026-27 Tuition and Fees Schedule . Prices are updated annually.
***New undergraduate international students must make a nonrefundable seat deposit of $500 at the time of their acceptance to secure on-campus housing. Each academic year, the housing deposit will be $500.00, payable prior to the spring Housing Fair. The housing deposit will be applied to your account for the fall semester.
Contact [email protected] for information about other associated admissions costs and fees.
Can I work in the U.S. as an international student with an F-1 visa?
According to United States Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) regulations, those who enter the country with “F-1” student visas may not accept off-campus employment.
This regulation does not apply to on-campus work-study programs that are available. Dependents of students are not allowed to work under any circumstances.
Please do not expect to work in order to meet educational expenses.
Will I need a visa if I want to study online at Franciscan University?
No. Only international students who want to study on campus need to apply for an F-1 student visa. International students who apply for online study do not need to apply for an F-1 student visa.
Can the English proficiency exam requirement be waived?
Yes. Franciscan University will waive the English proficiency exam requirement if the applicant submits competitive scores from the SAT or the ACT that meet our general undergraduate admissions baseline. Contact your admissions counselor to find out whether you qualify for a waiver.
What is Franciscan’s academic calendar?
Franciscan University operates on a semester-based academic calendar. In a 12-month year, there are two semesters, each containing 15 weeks of class instruction plus examination periods.
The fall semester begins in late August and ends in mid-December. The spring semester begins in early January and ends in early May. Summer classes are also available.
Are there scholarships for international students?
Yes. However, scholarships and financial aid for international students are limited. Ask your admissions counselor for more information about scholarships.
