Marked With the Wounds of Christ
An Academic Conference on the Stigmatization of St. Francis

Franciscan University of Steubenville

September 12-14, 2024

Registration closed Thursday, September 5, 2024.

The Conference

In celebration of the eighth centenary of St. Francis of Assisi’s reception of the stigmata on Mount La Verna, Franciscan University of Steubenville and Saint Francis University will host a weekend-long academic conference on the topic of this historic event. The conference will feature talks by leading Franciscan scholars, sacred liturgies, and musical performances.

Stigmata has been the focus of much academic discussion and popular fascination since St. Francis of Assisi became the first to miraculously receive the wounds of Christ. Conference presenters will examine the evidence for St. Francis’ stigmata, its legacy in the history of the Franciscan order and the life of the Church, and its implications for Christian theology, philosophy, and anthropology.
