STEUBENVILLE, OH—Jimmy John’s opened a new location this month at Franciscan Square. The popular sandwich franchise is the latest addition to Franciscan Square’s lineup of popular restaurants, which include Rubi’s Pizza and Grill and the newly opened Irish pub, The Harp and Habit.
The Jimmy John’s franchise is operated by Spin the Planet, which is owned by Franciscan University of Steubenville alumnus Dan VanSteenburg ’92 and managed by fellow alumnus, Liam Galligan ’22. Jimmy John’s marks an exciting new development for the whole community as University alumni choose to bring their businesses to Franciscan Square.
“Landing a national chain like Jimmy John’s is a big win for the University and the local community,” said Phil Rook, director of Real Estate Development at the University. “I would like to thank Dan for believing in Steubenville. It’s a great sign that we are starting to see new businesses interested in expanding into our market.”
Local developer Franco Carapellotti was instrumental in bringing the new restaurant to town.
“We are grateful for Jimmy John’s and the Spin the Planet team for seeing the potential in Steubenville and Franciscan Square,” said Carapellotti. “They’re a great addition to the Square and our whole community, and we’re really excited to have them!”
According to Rook, there are plans to bring many more restaurants and businesses to Franciscan Square.
“We welcome all business owners to consider partnering with us, especially Franciscan University alumni, as we work with our friends in the community to revitalize the Ohio Valley, provide residents and students more amenities, and create job opportunities,” said Rook.
The goal for Franciscan Square is a mixed-use development that provides hospitality, recreation, and refreshment for local community members, guests, and university students alike. As of spring 2024, seven acres remain for future development. The site’s development opportunities include the potential for construction of multi-use buildings including office and retail space and multifamily housing.
