STEUBENVILLE, OHIO—In honor of the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, Portugal, Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence “to the pious faithful who visit a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration…on the 13th of each month from May to October” of this year.
A plenary indulgence is the complete elimination of temporal punishment due to sin.
Those seeking the indulgence are invited to visit the statue of Our Lady of Fatima placed in the narthex of Christ the King Chapel, which will remain available for veneration until October 13, 2017
To gain the plenary indulgence one must recite an Our Father and the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima’s intercession while praying before the statue. The ordinary conditions must also be met:
-
- complete detachment from sin,
- sacramental confession within ten days before or after, and
- reception of the Holy Eucharist within ten days before or after.
This is not the first time a plenary indulgence has been made available on campus. Since 2009, the Portiuncula Chapel has been a site designated by the Vatican as a place where the faithful can obtain plenary indulgences on any of five occasions yearly.
