St. Francis and Contemporary Questions in Death, Dying, and Human Dignity

In 2026, the Church marks 800 years since the death and entrance into heaven of St. Francis of Assisi. Near the end of his life, St. Francis joyfully embraced “Sister Death,” calling her “the gate of Life.” His remarkable witness continues to challenge modern assumptions about suffering, mortality, and what it means to die well.

To honor this anniversary, Franciscan University of Steubenville will host a weekend academic conference exploring St. Francis, his view of death and eternal life, and the lasting relevance of his witness today. Bringing together theologians, philosophers, medical professionals, ethicists, clergy, and scholars from a variety of disciplines, the conference will examine how the Christian understanding of death speaks to some of the most pressing questions facing contemporary society.

Presentations and discussions will address topics including human dignity at the end of life, palliative and hospice care, physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia, the ethics of emerging medical technologies, accompaniment of the suffering and dying, and the Christian hope of eternal life. Drawing from the rich intellectual and spiritual traditions of the Church, participants will consider how faith and reason can help individuals, families, healthcare professionals, and society navigate the profound realities of death, suffering, and loss.

At a time when cultural and medical debates shape how we understand life's final moments, this conference offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the wisdom of St. Francis and the Catholic tradition. Through scholarly inquiry and faithful dialogue, attendees will explore how the saint's embrace of “Sister Death” continues to illuminate the path toward authentic human flourishing, compassionate care, and the hope of eternal life.
