STEUBENVILLE, OHIO—The centerpiece of the largest commercial development undertaken in Steubenville in more than 20 years is open for business.

The Inn at Franciscan Square, a Best Western Plus Property, is a four-story hotel with 113 guest rooms located on University Boulevard across from the main entrance to Franciscan University of Steubenville.

The Inn greeted its first patrons on Monday, October 31. The new hotel replaces the Best Western Plus hotel on the north side of University Boulevard, which was constructed in the early 1960s. That building will be repurposed for other uses by Franciscan University. Damons, the popular sports bar and eatery, remains open at its present location for the foreseeable future.

At the October 20 Grand Opening Ceremony for The Inn, Franciscan University President Father Sean O. Sheridan, TOR, said, “I am pleased that The Inn at Franciscan Square symbolizes hospitality,” one of the virtues dear to the heart of St. Francis of Assisi.

“As Franciscans, we strive to extend that spirit of warmth and welcome to all, believing we encounter Jesus Christ in each person we meet. It is my hope and prayer that The Inn at Franciscan Square as well as this green space and the future restaurants will be known for the blessing of hospitality they bring to our guests and our local friends and neighbors alike.”

David Skiviat, vice president of Finance and Administration at Franciscan University, expressed gratitude to the city of Steubenville and other civic and private entities that helped move the project forward over the past 10 years.

Earlier, he said, “With the opening of The Inn at Franciscan Square and the ongoing work on the nearby State Route 7 interchange, a dramatic transformation of an important gateway to Steubenville is taking shape before our eyes. The addition in the near future of office, retail, and dining establishments at Franciscan Square will present an inviting entryway to Steubenville and a new gathering area for the community.”

Best Western Plus properties are known for providing a high level of service. For The Inn at Franciscan Square, these amenities include six VIP suites, an indoor pool, an outdoor lounge and fire pit, 24-hour fitness and business centers, meeting rooms, and a complimentary full breakfast.

Architectural themes from buildings on the Franciscan University campus give The Inn at Franciscan Square a unique “Franciscan flavor.” Inside, photographs of landmarks on the University campus and downtown Steubenville murals grace the lobby, hallways, and guest rooms, along with inspirational quotes from St. Francis of Assisi, St. Teresa of Calcutta and others.

One of the highlights in the lobby is a large painting by celebrated Ohio Valley artist Dave Barnhouse, who expressed admiration for the mission of Franciscan University and its role in the community. The painting depicts scenes on the Franciscan University campus including Christ the King Chapel, the Portiuncula Chapel, and the steel cross that overlooks the Ohio River.

A community gathering place sits directly in front of The Inn. This large green space has the potential to be used for recreational and social events.

Between The Inn and University Boulevard, two parcels are being readied for office, retail, and restaurant tenants by 68 Properties, a local developer. Foundation work started this month on the first building, while discussions continue with restaurateurs interested in the property. In coming years, additional parcels are planned at Franciscan Square for retail and office use.

The address for the Inn at Franciscan Square is 200 Franciscan Square, Steubenville. Reservations can be made by calling 740-282-0901. More about Franciscan Square can be found online at FranciscanSquare.com.
