STEUBENVILLE, OH – Franciscan University of Steubenville has named the two winners of this year’s Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, Scholarship Competition: Anne Jakubek and Hannah Lang.

The two high school seniors were chosen from among 66 competitors from 29 states. Each will receive a four-year full-tuition academic scholarship.

Anne Jakubek of Summerfield, North Carolina, is currently enrolled in Kolbe Academy, an online Catholic homeschool program. An accomplished pianist and percussionist, Jakubek is a member of the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra and was selected to perform at the 2016 Van Cliburn Festival. She also scored in the top 1 percent on the SAT. Jakubek plans to study biology on a pre-medicine track with a minor in music. Her career goal is to become an emergency room physician.

Hannah Lang of Plymouth, Michigan, attends Father Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor Township. Lang, an actress and flutist, organizes music outreach performances at local hospitals and nursing homes and is a co-founder of Wardrobe Productions, a company that puts on summer theater camps for second through eighth graders. She plans to study nursing at Franciscan and to become a pediatric nurse practitioner, thanks in part to the care her younger sister received after two open-heart surgeries.

The Scanlan Scholarship is named in honor of Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, who served as president of Franciscan University for 26 years and was instrumental in revitalizing the Catholic identity of the school. Father Scanlan passed away in January at age 85.

The students competed for the scholarships by submitting a portfolio,  video, writing an essay, and visiting campus.

Located in southeastern Ohio, Franciscan University of Steubenville educates, evangelizes, and sends forth joyful disciples worldwide. The University attracts over 2,400 students from all 50 states and 12 countries and has ranked in the elite “top tier” of Midwest universities in U.S. News & World Report’s guidebook on “America’s Best Colleges” since 1998.
