STEUBENVILLE, OHIO — Franciscan University of Steubenville’s women’s club flag football team took the field at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday, October 12, competing against the University of Pittsburgh during halftime of the Steelers-Browns game. Franciscan was one of only four teams in the country invited to participate, a recognition of the team’s breakout success in its inaugural season.

“It was incredible to be part of spreading Franciscan University’s mission of excellence and passion, even to the football field,” said team captain and senior Anne Seida. “There’s no university I could have more proudly worn on my jersey as I ran, surrounded by my fellow Franciscan Barons, into the Steelers’ stadium to take the field.”

Formed in 2024, the Barons finished their first season with an impressive 6-1 record, earning wins over the University of Pittsburgh and several Presidents’ Athletic Conference teams. Off the field, the team is known for its strong community and joyful witness to the Catholic faith.

“This was a phenomenal experience for our student-athletes and a proud moment for Franciscan University and the Steubenville community,” said Daniel Andersen, Franciscan’s athletic director. “I’m grateful so many fans were able to see the faith, energy, and joy that define our players both on and off the field.”

While flag football is not yet a sanctioned NCAA sport, the Committee on Women’s Athletics recently recommended adding it to the NCAA’s Emerging Sports for Women list—a major step toward championship status.
