November 2 concert to feature works by Mendelssohn and Schubert.
The acclaimed Omni Quartet, featuring current and former musicians of the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra, will perform a free concert at Franciscan University of Steubenville on Monday, November 2, at 6:00 p.m. The event is open to the public.
Presented by Chamber Music at Franciscan, the concert will feature Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in D Major and Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 13 in A Minor, also known as Rosamunde.
Formed in 2009, the Omni Quartet includes violinists Amy Lee, former associate concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra, and Alicia Koelz; violist Joanna Patterson Zakany; and cellist Tanya Ell. The musicians have performed at some of the world’s most prestigious concert venues, including Carnegie Hall and Vienna’s Musikverein, as members of the Cleveland Orchestra.
The 90-minute concert continues Franciscan University’s commitment to fostering an appreciation for beauty alongside truth and goodness as essential dimensions of Catholic education.
“The three transcendentals, goodness, truth and beauty, are a three-legged stool in a sense: A full appreciation of one is not possible without the other two. Only experiences of profound beauty, the most difficult of the three to teach, can raise awareness of its absolute necessity,” said Stanley Konopka, director of Franciscan University’s New Chamber Orchestra. “Hearing world-class musicians perform Mendelssohn and Schubert gives our students and the public something a textbook cannot: a direct encounter with artistic excellence.”
The concert will take place in Christ the Teacher Hall in the Pope St. Paul VI Event Center on Franciscan University’s campus. Admission is free, and the public is welcome.
